Jean Passepartout was employed as Phileas Fogg's valet just hours before his master daresay he can travel the world in only eighty days. Although being very unfamiliar with his master, he is very devoted to him and tries his best not to cause blunders that will delay his master's pursuit. When Fix accuses Phileas of being a robber, he defends him bravely and even says that never in the world would he ever believe that. Even though he does end up creating problems for Phileas, he apologizes almost immediately after. For example, after he is saved by Phileas by the Sioux, he couldn't forgive himself and asked to be pardoned many times.
If I must say so, Passepartout was the comical relief of the book. His clumsiness, mixed with his inexperience, made the book a lot more enjoyable for the readers. But he has many wonderful traits that liven up any situation. He's very honest and isn't afraid to speak out about how he feels. Passepartout has a large impact on the book because sometimes his problems end up being Phileas' job to solve, thus delaying his journey. He also seems to be Phileas' right hand man and I feel as if he could not go on with the adventure if Passepartout was not with him.
